Applied Behavior Analysis is the practice of using researched and scientifically based strategies to teach desired behaviors and skills. Some of these techniques include the appropriate use of reinforcement, shaping, chaining, verbal behavior tools, prompting and prompt fading, errorless learning and appropriate error correction training. Meaningful Day Services, Inc. (MDS) provides behavior management services to children and adults challenged with a variety of behavioral difficulties. These services are home-based, although consultants will assess individual's needs in any environment, including the community, work, school, residential facilities, and in the context of the family. The behavior consultants assess and intervene with a wide range of behavioral difficulties that range from relatively mild to severe behaviors that may pose risks to the individual as well as others.

Supportive counseling services through Meaningful Day Services, Inc. (MDS) has the advantage of serving individuals in their homes. Home-based counseling provides the advantage of assessing and treating individuals in the environment where their difficulties occur. Counselors can more accurately and obtain a more accurate picture of the nature and extend of the individual's difficulties. Participation in counseling is generally facilitated with such an approach. Office-based services can be provided when more appropriate.

Horseback riding as a form of recreational therapy can be extremely beneficial to clients with a variety of disabilities. A horses' movement simulates a human's gait by generating the same movement used for walking in the hips and back. This can be especially beneficial to people who are in wheelchairs or have trouble with their gait. Horseback riding also increases balance through the inner ear; it increases joint mobility and strength; can create a sense of relaxation, and can build trust, confidence and self-esteem.

Music Therapy is a well-established allied health profession similar to occupational and physical therapy. It consists of using music therapeutically to address behavioral, social, psychological, communicative, physical, sensory- motor, and/or cognitive functioning. Because music therapy is a powerful and non-threatening medium, unique outcomes are possible. Music Therapy uses music to address non-musical goals. Musicality is not the goal of music therapy, but assists the method used to reach a therapeutic outcome.

It is based on the concept that people get better when they are engaged in activities that have personal meaning and importance. Occupation is any activity that a person finds meaningful and that contributes to the sense of "self." Recreational therapy, also referred to as therapeutic recreation, is defined as a profession of specialists who utilize activities as a form of treatment for persons who are physically, mentally or emotionally disabled. Differing from diversional or recreation services, recreational therapy utilizes various activities as a form of active treatment to promote the independent physical, cognitive, emotional and social functioning of persons disabled as a result of trauma or disease, by enhancing current skills and facilitating the establishment of new skills for daily living and community functioning.

It was not a stretch for MDS to venture into Residential Services. After establishing a very successful Day Service Program (in which participants actually work and improve skills!), it seemed natural that MDS would replicate this with children and adults in their own living environment. Also, MDS has worked with individuals with very challenging behavioral and psychiatric difficulties for years. It makes sense, then, that MDS would be strongly motivated to assist individuals at home.

Speech and language therapy services through Meaningful Day Services, Inc. (MDS) have the advantage of serving clients in their homes and throughout the community. Home-based services provide the advantage of facilitating and improving communication skills with clients in their natural language settings. Speech/Language Pathologists (SLPs) can assess the skills and needs of each individual in their daily environments, and include therapy tools and techniques that are appropriate for that person's immediate and long term needs. Services can also be expanded to meet clients' communication needs in various community settings, or in an office setting when deemed appropriate.
